Mitra Bali is situated in one of the prettiest places on earth. But Bali's perception as an island paradise with prosperous artisans hides a darker truth: marginalized artisans living in remote villages receive a small portion of their craft sales to tourists. Your fair trade purchase pays them sustainable wages and reduces their exploitation.
The skilled hand of a Balinese artisan remains one this island's greatest economic assets; since 1994 Mitra Bali has worked to empower small handicraft producers using fair trade practices. To counter their marginalization in the tourist trade, the organization helps these artisan groups market their products, improve their working conditions, negotiate fair prices, and export their crafts beyond the local market. Mitra Bali operates a design center, where producers can access resources, work with designers, and receive training on new trends and production issues. Artisans are also trained on health and safety, as well as the use of environmentally sustainable resources. Mitra Bali works with around 100 artisans, all in small family workshops in Bali.
