MAHAGUTHI CRAFT
Serrv partner since 1998
Mahaguthi Craft markets traditional Nepalese handicrafts from more than 1,200 artisans, many situated in remote villages and mountainous parts of the country. Your purchase supports a near century-long commitment to disadvantaged women, and provides them vital home employment, fair wages, social benefits, and outlets to sell their crafts.
The seeds of Mahaguthi were planted in 1926, when Tulshi Mehar Shrestha set out to help low-caste women and widows become self-reliant. For challenging this caste system he was exiled to India, where he studied with Mahatma Ghandi and learned to weave cloth. On his return to Nepal, he founded a school and an ashram where destitute women could find safe haven, and a vocational center to train women to weave. Mahaguthi: Craft with a Conscience was born in 1984 as a retail outlet to sell these textiles. Today income from handcraft sales continues to support the ashram and its programs, but Mahaguthi's impact is broader, supporting artisans in many rural workshops throughout Nepal. Upholding fair trade principles like payment of fair wages, benefits for producers, safe working conditions, and protection of the environment, its work also helps revive Nepalese craft traditions.
